In the Anthropocene era, Gaia, our ancestral mother who personifies the Earth, is suffering from human pressure. Like explorers recklessly venturing into uncharted seas, human beings are sacrificing our blue planet in an insatiable quest for power and financial wealth. The contemporary odalisque - expecting a child and wearing a gas mask - who appears as the work's subject is, like most of my human portraits, a member of my family clan.

À l'ère de l'Anthropocène, Gaïa, notre mère ancestrale qui personnifie la Terre, souffre de la pression humaine. Tels des explorateurs s'aventurant imprudemment dans des mers inexplorées, les êtres humains sacrifient notre planète bleue dans une quête insatiable de pouvoir et de richesse financière. L'odalisque contemporaine - attendant un enfant et portant un masque à gaz - qui apparaît comme sujet de l'œuvre est, comme la plupart de mes portraits humains, un membre de mon clan familial.

Item Special Note

Chantal Dahan is a multi/trans-disciplinary artist (photography, video and literature). Since the beginning of her 30 year artistic practice she has explored memory and identity drawing inspiration from her own experience  – mixing the intimate and the collective –, her environment and that of the planet as a whole.

Dahan was born in Marseille, France, and emigrated to Canada in her early teens. She holds an Honours B.A. in Visual Arts from the University of Ottawa and an M.A. in Visual and Media Arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal. Her work has been shown in numerous art exhibitions and film festivals in Canada and abroad. Her works are part of various private and public collections, including those of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the Ottawa Art Gallery, which has acquired, among others, her entire body of work, a family portrait blending the intimate and the collective : The Dahan Bunch - Perdu dans l'espace and Paris-Ottawa,1968.

Chantal Dahan est une artiste multi/trans-disciplinaire (photographie, vidéo et littérature). Depuis trois décennies, elle explore la mémoire et l’identité en s’inspirant de son vécu  – mêlant l’intime et le collectif  –, son environnement et celui à l’échelle planétaire. 

Elle est née à Marseille et a émigré au Canada à sa pré-adolescence. Elle est titulaire d’un baccalauréat spécialisé en arts visuels de l’Université d’Ottawa et d'une maîtrise en arts visuels et médiatiques de l'Université du Québec à Montréal. Ses œuvres ont été présentées dans de nombreuses expositions artistiques et nombreux festivals de films au Canada et à l'étranger. Ses œuvres font partie de diverses collections privées et publiques, dont celles du Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec et la Galerie d'art d'Ottawa, qui a fait l'acquisition, entre autres, de l'ensemble de son œuvre, un portrait de famille mêlant l’intime et le collectif : The Dahan Bunch – Perdu dans l’espace et Paris-Ottawa,1968.
