This painting started as a photo taken through a blue plastic water bottle during a car ride. The bottle distorted my view of the fields we drove by, and I couldn't focus on the road ahead or the meaning of the plastic—only on the dead bugs on the windshield.

Cette œuvre a vu le jour lors d’un trajet en voiture. J’ai pris une photo en utilisant une bouteille d’eau de plastique bleu comme filtre. La bouteille a déformé ma vue du champ que l’on traversait et m’empêchait de faire la mise au point sur la route qui s’allongeait devant et sur la signification du plastique. Je n’y voyais que les insectes morts sur le parebrise.

Kyla Mastersmith is an emerging, abstract painter based in Ottawa, ON. She graduated from Concordia University (Montreal, QC) in 2023 with a BFA in Studio Arts. Her practice depends on distorting reference photos of physical things into obscured, nearly identifiable forms, to pose questions about identity, time and environment.
Artiste installée à Ottawa, Kyla Mastersmith travaille l’abstraction. Elle est titulaire d’un baccalauréat en beaux-arts (studio) de l’Université Concordia (Montréal), décerné en 2023. Dans sa pratique, elle transforme en éléments travestis toutefois presque reconnaissables, des photographies de références d’objets physiques afin de contester les notions d’identité, de temporalité et d’environnement.
