Item Description

About the Museum:
After years of collecting art on a personal level, in 1891 Isabella Stewart Gardner inherited $1.75 million upon her father’s death and was able to begin collecting on a larger level. As the collection grew, Isabella and her husband needed to expand and thought about a museum. Construction of the Museum was mostly completed by late 1901. Gardner moved into the private fourth-floor living quarters and created galleries on the first three floors. She continued to acquire works and change the installations for the rest of her life.
