Item Description
A special opportunity to view treasured objects from the Museum of American Bird Art with museum director, Dr. Jennifer S. Tafe. Tour Mass Audubon’s 130-acre Brewster’s Woods Wildlife Sanctuary and see some of the incredible works of art from the museum’s collection of over 3,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs, and archival materials that celebrate the beauty and wonder of birds. Works on view will include paintings by modern and contemporary artists, early decoys by famous New England carvers, and the 19th century photographs of Mass Audubon’s first president, William Brewster.
Since its founding in 1896, Mass Audubon has been inextricably linked to art as a unique way of connecting people to nature. Mass Audubon commissioned the best bird artists of the day to create works that furthered the mission, and the organization soon became the recipient of gifts of art. Over time, the collection has grown into the world-class art museum it is today. The historic site at Brewster’s Woods was formerly part of the country homestead of William Brewster (1851-1919), an early leader in American ornithology and curator at Harvard University's Museum of Comparative Zoology—and theâ¯first President of Mass Audubon. Brewster was an avid photographer, and the photographs in Mass Audubon’s collection depict the locations where Brewster spent most of his time observing birds, including his Concord property, which is now Brewster’s Woods Wildlife Sanctuary.
