Item Description
Photograph of Atlantic Puffins by Thomas D. Mangelsen
Numbered 140/950 and signed Thomas D. Mangelsen 1981.
The photograph is matted and simply framed. Image size is approx 9 x 11 inches.
A charming pair of Atlantic puffins photographed along the coast of Maine.
Common puffins arrive on the rocky coastline of Maine each year to nest in shallow burrows dug in the sparse soil. The adults will feed the young until they are fully grown, and then will abandon them to find their own way out of the burrow and into the safety of the ocean.
A Nebraska native, Mangelsen’s love of nature, his life outdoors and business success were heavily influenced by his father. An avid sportsman, Harold Mangelsen took his sons to favorite blinds along the Platte River in Nebraska to observe the great flocks of ducks, geese and cranes that migrate through the valley. From these adventures, Mangelsen learned important lessons for photographing in the field, most notably patience and understanding animal behavior.
