Singing Cowboy in the Desert with his Darlin
7’ Pipliner Retro Shape
Rubber Soul Surfboards
Single Fin
For eccentric surfer, artist, musician, board builder and muscle car-tinkerer Brian Bent, the past resonates in actionable ways. Bent builds and rides pre-WWII-style kook boxes. He builds primitive Hot Rods from scratch. He plays reverb-drenched garage rock that would’ve made the teens at the Rendezvous Ballroom stomp. And his wardrobe consists mostly of blue-collar, Marlon Brando staples (cuffed blue jeans, white T-shirts, leather jackets), personally altered with punk rock aesthetics. Meanwhile, Bent’s artwork has lately veered into nostalgic territory, as well.
A fervent consumer of surf publications since childhood, Bent has recently taken to painting SURFER Magazine covers from the mid-60s. Working fastidiously and using bold, expressionist strokes, Bent’s paintings evoke an augmented reality that brings to mind the works of Ralph Steadman. In reinterpreting SURFER magazine covers, Bent gives viewers a new lens through which to revisit singular moments, fleeting feelings, and defining styles in surf history. As Bent illuminates iconic surf world ephemera, there’s a very Warhol-esque, pop art aesthetic at play, recognizable to generations of surfers.
Item Special Note
PACKING & SHIPPING
Kindly note, that packing, shipping, and handling are not included - winning bidders are responsible for pick up and/or shipment of their board, including costs to package/ship. Boards can be picked up at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel or the purchaser can arrange for shipping. If shipped, we often work with a local UPS in Dana Point as the carrier. They have years of experience packaging/shipping our surfboards and do a wonderful job.
Pick up, packing, and shipping surf boards UPS Ground that are less than 7' costs approximately $500. Pick up, packing, and freighting surf boards that are more than 7' to 13' averages between $590 and $1,090. Kindly note, all surfboards longer than 7' can only be shipped by freight service. Additionally, please keep in mind the above values are only estimates and may be more or less, dependent on the board size and where it is travelling.
We strongly recommend that you inquire with our UPS Partner at (949) 248-9150 ext.0 to get a quote of how much shipping to your address will cost, as price varies due to location. If you arrange shipment with our UPS partner, we will handle the pick-up arrangement with them but will need to know your shipping address and phone number. They will be in touch directly to confirm packaging/shipment costs. The hotel does not manage this. If you prefer to use a different carrier, you will need to arrange pick up directly with the carrier from the resort and next steps.
Boards will be available for pick-up and shipping after Wednesday, January 1, 2025. Boards must be picked up no later than Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
