Item Description
This item is a wonderful paddle created from Koa wood by local artist and craftsman Ray Nitta. The paddle measures 59" x 11" and is inscribed "Ka hoe uli' Koa, R. Nitta 2023". Note the beauty of the wood and the fine craftsmanship that went into creating this piece. The wood of the shaft flows seamlessly into the wide blade. This piece reminds viewers of the voyagers who first discovered Hawaii and would be a treasured piece when added to your art collection.
Koa (Acacia Koa) is a species of flowering tree in the family Fabaceae. It is endemic to (i.e. found only in) Hawaii. Its name in the Hawaiian language, koa, also means brave, bold, fearless, or warrior. The wood is highly valued for its beauty and it generally grows at elevation between 2000 and 6000 feet elevation.
The heart of the master is felt in every stroke onto the wood. Ray Nitta is a wood craftsman and artisan residing in Kekaha, Kauai. An erstwhile teacher, he is still active in enrichment programs at various schools on the west side of the island. He has exhibited his work internationally. Ray is a board member of Lawai International Center.
There is a wonderful article about Ray's Westside Woodworks by Margaret A. Haapoja in the January 6, 2014 issue of Green Magazine Hawaii.
