Item Description
5" x 6.5"; 9.5" x 11.5" with mat and frame. Oil on paper.
Donated by the artist.
Amalia Tagaris is a first-generation Greek-American contemporary artist. A lifelong affinity and admiration for the ocean is depicted in her oil works on paper. Tagaris paints quickly and intuitively as she mixes and adds thin layers of oil, using only the tips of her fingers to bring the seascape to life. Cape Elizabeth Seascape II is from memories of looking down at the ocean from the magnificent rocky coastline of Cape Elizabeth in Maine. Although it may not be an exact portrayal of reality, it is as Tagaris recalls the experience. Varying hues of blues, whites, creams, and pale pinks are used to express her interpretation of the water and the varying light qualities in the sky. Tagaris hopes her work invokes the familiar sense of being near the water's edge.
