Item Description
Enjoy a half-day in historic Concord Massachusetts with KCT Board member and former Director of the Concord Museum, Tom Putnam, retracing the footsteps of Henry David Thoreau. Tom will meet you and your guests (as many as you wish) in Concord and begin the tour at his former museum which recently opened two newly renovated galleries that feature Thoreau’s desk, bed, flute, walking stick, and other ephemera. With input from you, the tour can also include visits to Thoreau’s birthplace, the historic North Bridge (site of the famous revolutionary war battle), the town center where he and his family lived and the former site where he was jailed for not paying his taxes, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s home where he lived for many months, and Walden Pond which includes a visitor center featuring a short film by Ken Burns and a replica of his hut. For those who wish, there is also a lovely short 15-minute walk to the actual site where he lived and penned these words (which could be a mantra for local land trusts): “In Wildness is the preservation of the world.”
Should you wish to add lunch there are two options. Thoreau’s family actually lived in the building that is now the Colonial Inn which offers typical New England pub fare, or we could plan ahead and order sandwiches / salads at Nashoba Brook Bakery and enjoy a picnic lunch at Walden Pond (weather permitting).
