Item Description
This 11 ¾” basket depicts the Mud Hen Kachina with a rainbow over him and Hopi rain clouds on either side from Second Mesa. Circa 1970. It’s woven from Yucca leaves with vegetal dyes of black (Sunflower Seeds) and terra cotta (Hopi Tea/Amaranth). The Mud Head Kachina is known for humor and entertainment at the Hopi Dances but can also aid in balance and healing. As in many Hopi baskets, the importance of rain is highlighted on the perimeters of their baskets. The appraisal of value is provided by Terry DeWald, a member of the Antique Tribal Art Dealers Association.
