Artist: Julie Eldredge Dykens
Julie is an artist who owns the Local Color Art Gallery in West Chatham. She is a native Cape Codder having grown up in Chatham and having attended Chatham Schools.
Julie majored in Studio Art at Smith College after a stint as an offshore commercial fisherwoman and a seafood wholesaler.
Julie?s art reflects her deep love of the natural world here in Chatham and on Cape Cod.
She works primarily in flat clay reliefs and in wooden sculpture. Both mediums are inspired by her experiences on the ocean and tending to inshore waters and the shoreline. Her works are detailed and, at times, whimsical.
Julie lives in West Chatham with her husband, Jeff. They have three children and two beautiful grandchildren.

Cape Cod Clambake
This whale was created with white clay used in a process known as handbuilding. The clay is rolled to a certain thickness and the artist then begins to?build?the design he or she has imagined. In this case I have imagined a wonderful end -of- summer clam bake to which all the characters have contributed! After the clay dries thoroughly it is red. Then it is glazed. And then after glazing there is a nal ring.
Having grown up in Chatham, it was my good fortune to be a part of a group of families who went to North Beach every summer Sunday and celebrated summer?s end with a wonderful
clambake. I did not know how very lucky I was. It is a very fond memory. I did not use North Beach in this piece as I have always loved Cowyard Beach, both for its? name and its? location.

This whale is approximately 58" x 15"
It can be displayed indoors or outdoors, but would probably be happier indoors.
